Is it rightful to block a motorcyclist from lane-splitting in the U.S.?

Lane splitting is legal in California. Being a motorcycle rider in the area, it is a godsend. If you have ever been in California traffic, and on a motorcycle in 100+ degree heat, being able to carefully and reasonably progress through 20 miles of stopped traffic saves you from heat stroke and an overheated motorcycle. For those in other states… well, eventually you can catch up to the rest of the world. Lane splitting, or filtering where allowed, may be perfectly legal where you are- take a moment to know your laws.

However, intentionally impeding the movement of another person does fall under the classification of assault. Using your vehicle to do so escalates it to vehicular assault. And it you get cute and open a door into someone, it is possible that someone can up it to assault with a deadly weapon.

Hitting someone with your car isn't like the movies. People do not magically just walk it off. It's like dropping a full refrigerator on someone from the roof of a building. It's attempted murder, if they survive.

There is no reason for you to block them. They aren't getting a prize at the end of the road that you should have gotten. They aren't getting the last cookie, and they aren't taking anything from you. You have no right to impede them.

Better yet, get out of your cage and join them on two wheels. The heat and cold may be uncomfortable, but the ride is amazing.

If basic sense and decency, or an invitation to join the family don't appeal to you, how about self preservation. If you pull that with me you will be eating a face full of mace, and I'll empty the whole can on you until your car is stopped turned off, and the threat of you trying to kill me is over. And I'm very reserved. If you use your vehicle as a weapon with many others, you will learn what a sucking chest wound feels like on both sides after a few rounds of hollow point make semi permanent adjustments to your torso. A car is a deadly weapon- you use it against another person and they can defend themselves with a similar force.

Get it through your head, you do not have the right to endanger someone else's life, especially for something petty like the fact that they can continue to move through traffic while you sit in your air-conditioned cage.
