This time it is the starter relay:

After months of dealing with a pesky problem with the starter relay, BMW Motorrad has finally issued a worldwide “stop sale” recall and is replacing customers’ relay assemblies with a new design.

The starter relay issue first appeared in fall of 2023, with some R1300 GS models suffering from defective assemblies that saw the starters overheating, among other issues. Some of these early issues were reported by forum inmates here. It appears the issue has to do with moisture getting into the relay and shorting it out internally, causing all sorts of unpleasantries.

Before March 18, 2024, BMW made some changes to the design that were supposed to eliminate the issue, but apparently these tweaks were not enough. Now, the entire production run built before that date has been recalled worldwide. The relay re-design after that date seemed to sort out the issue.

Note that this is not a “do not ride” recall. You can still use your R1300 GS. Only a handful of bikes have reported issues due to the relay’s design.
