Remember the R nineT Urban G/S? Based off the R nineT retro standard, it looked like an adventure bike, but came in a street-friendly chassis. Well, BMW has morphed the R nineT platform into the new R12, and as such, we now also see a new adventurized version of that G/S idea. But now, the new BMW R12 G/S looks like it’s a lot better-suited for the dirt than its predecessor.

An off-road chassis

BMW says this in its marketing copy: “the new BMW R 12 G/S is much more than just a visual tribute to its predecessor from 45 years ago. It has everything you need for serious off-road riding today, both in terms of drivetrain and chassis.” Sounds like they intend it to go head-to-head with Triumph’s Scrambler 1200 series, which took a big leap forward in its off-road capability in its last update. Make no mistake, the R12 G/S is very much based on the standard model, but it does have some key changes to help it off-road.
