My son and I are planning a lengthy trip this summer from Milwaukee out to Banff. I've been struggling with the Garmin Base Camp software for my Zumo 590LM. This must be the most non-intuitive software since Fortran. I even called Garmin and they said, "We'll need to transfer you to our Outdoor guys as they're the only ones who could possibly help you". NOT!

So, a few weeks into this and I still can't get it to plot out my course. I wish it worked like Google Maps-add destination after destination and it creates a route. Anyone in the club with knowledge of how to use Base Camp? I'd buy someone a nice dinner to get me comfortable working on this. Perhaps a couple of cold ones?

Look forward to any tips and training I can get.

Regards,

Gene Huegin

I have maintained my copy of Mapsource that came with my Zumo because I also find Basecamp quite useless. I can't believe Garmin thinks Basecamp is the way to go.

I wonder if Gene can download MapSource?
Try here: www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

If not call them to see if you can.

That file is only an update if you have an original mapsource installation. I would be willing to help put a route together but I will need to see if I can import it into Basecamp.

Well I just spent the morning watching last nights Supercross races and studying Basecamp. Importing from Mapsource is no problem but I did figure out a bit more on working with Basecamp. It is not as easy to customize your base route but it can be done. I am up for a cold one or two. Gene, let's plan on a Saturday afternoon and see how many cold ones it takes to build your trip.

Doug, thanks for the offer. I'll be out of town next Saturday (28-29) but perhaps February 4 or February 11? Just let me know what your favorite brew is, too. In preparation, would it be best if I listed the location and addresses on my journey so they can be "loaded" easily?

By the way, one of the challenges is that Base Camp will not allow me to ride from Cooke City, MT directly to Red Lodge, MT via the Beartooth Highway. Rather, it routes me 150 miles back west, then north, then east and finally south. I know this is a seasonal road but I have no such avoidances so no clue why this anomaly, like others, persists.

I look forward to getting together so I can get this journey on my GPS. My phone number is 978-790-2356 and email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Doug, which program do you use? "Base Camp" or "Base Camp 2D? And what is the difference?

Basecamp 4.5.2
I don't know that there are different versions like 2D.

Albeit a bit late, I wanted to extend my thanks to Doug and Gina for allowing us to come to their home and help Brenda and me successfully plot my summer trip. While not easy in Basecamp, it can be done.
